Kristy is hosting a special talk for fiber artists interested in in-depth discussion of materials and techniques at the same time on March 26th.
Tenacities and Opulent Fibers
Kristy Kun uses the word synthesis to describe the irreversible bonding of fibers used in her work, but the description goes well beyond referencing how wool fibers tangle and tighten into dense textiles, as it does when she’s making handmade felt.
Encompassing materials and techniques from cross disciplines; Kun’s sculpted forms challenge traditional notions of construction and tenacity—a synthesis, harnessing the strength of the most delicate fibers in juxtaposition against stronger ‘elemental’ undercurrents.
In Kun’s "Tenacities and Opulent Fibers" series, fine wool fibers constrain and contort steel wire, testing this hypothesis of strength, mirroring her own perseverance.
Inspired by tufts of wool snagged along wire fence lines of grazing pastures, Kun’s latest exploration reveals a beautiful relationship between these materials, creating translucent panels, towering structures and enduring imagery.
The “Tenacities and Opulent Fibers” series was completed during Kristy’s recent PNCA/ Leland Ironworks residency, at local sculptor Lee Kelly’s studio. There were storms the beginning of the month and on the first day of her residency, the wind whipped wild in the trees…
“Exordia” Kristy’s debut exhibit at the Waterstone Gallery featuring this newest work (a joint exhibit with oils & graphite artist, Shawn Demarest) opens February 28th and runs through April 2. The artists will speak of their works Sunday, March 19th at 11am. Kristy Kún and Shawn Demarest will speak of their works Sunday, March 19th at 11am.
Exordia features the work of the Waterstone Gallery's newest members - painter Shawn Demarest and fiber artist Kristy Kun. Both Demarest and Kun capture the often unseen and fleeting energy of the urban and natural environments alike in this transformative show.
