October Events

October will be an exciting month in Portland as it is the month of Portland Open Studios, the city will be hosting the International Sculpture Conference, and it is Portland Textile Month. I am excited to be involved in each of these great events. To really round out the month, I have scheduled a week of workshops to bring you to the studio and get you involved in the fun.

PDXOS- Portland Open Studios is a juried event that runs two weekends in October. Over 100 artists will open their studios to the public for demonstrations and sales. My open studio will feature a self-guided tour of the steps involved in creating my work. I gave this a test run in the spring, and it was a great success for sharing my process and teaching about the unique materials and techniques involved. There will be art for sale as well as materials and kits available at special visitor pricing.

PTM- Portland Textile Month runs through all of October and features over fifty events throughout the greater Portland region. I’ve been involved as an outreach volunteer for this year’s event and am also assisting with the Textile Symposium at PNCA that closes the month. To join in the celebration of the theme for the year, Exchange, I’m inviting PTM participants to visit during the open studio weekends, and I’ve created three short workshops to run the week between. My goal in creating a shorter workshop experience (one and two days rather than four or five) is to make participation easier for a wider audience. This will be a great way to introduce new participants to the possibilities of creating wool, and also allow veterans to absorb multiple classes as desired.

ISC-The International Sculpture Center is hosting their annual conference in Portland this year. They have organized a week of special events, gallery tours, and lectures from October 11-18. In anticipation of the event, the Waterstone Gallery (where I am represented) has curated a show of sculpture artists to feature in a mini-exhibition during the week.. I will be showing a new textile and wood sculpture alongside work from Greg Wilbur, Stephen Adams, Nancy Wilkins, Keaney Rathbun, Stephen Adams, and Jim Piper. There will be a talk by Sue-Del McCulloch and two of our featured sculptors on Sunday, October 13th, at 11am. More details to come.
